Appalling Results from my Social Media Review…what’s happening out there?

Just for interest, today I took a few hours out of my day to do a quick review of the websites and social media of a particular local group with a large membership. Due to the appalling results, the group will remain unnamed. What’s happened to everyone’s online marketing strategy? I have been truly stunned today to see what small businesses are doing…can’t they see what the Consumer sees?

I have to think it’s just a time factor. Hopefully all of their businesses are running so well they don’t have even 5 minutes a day to make sure their business information is up to date and their social media has relevant, interesting, and informative content being shared on a regular basis. I know however, that many of them are struggling to gain a foothold in the local marketplace, and many won’t make it past year two.

What did I find so appalling? If I am a potential client, the first thing I will do is look you up online. If your website isn’t mobile friendly and I’m on my phone, you’re out. If your website is out of date and hard to navigate, you’re gone. If I’m trying to learn more about the latest and greatest things about your business and the last time you posted on your Business Facebook page was July and we’re in January, you’re not interesting to me. What’s appalling is, that businesses are not paying attention to what they’re putting online. It’s like they started and then gave up on their social media and website and just hope the phone rings anyway.

What’s appalling is that today’s consumer is ONLINE first and then, if they see good things on your website and social, they MIGHT pick up the phone. That’s if they can find you at all. It’s unbelieveable to me that many of the businesses I reviewed didn’t even have a website. Can you trust someone that can’t be researched online before you buy their products or services? I know I don’t. If I come across a business without a website I think three things:
1. They are having money trouble.
2. They are not up to date on what’s happening in their industry.
3. They don’t want me to find out about them, so maybe they are not a legitimate company.

So, if you are a small business owner, please dust off that website and revive your social media. If you don’t know how, ask for help. If you don’t have time, hire someone. If you don’t know who to hire, call me.

Your online presence is your 24 hour a day, 365 days a year salesperson. Make sure you’re sending out the best possible message to your potential clients…you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.
